the tale of a brewfest

In the winter of 2013, after volunteering at a larger beer festival in columbus, ohio, i developed the dream of bringing a craft beer festival to my hometown of lancaster. A small planning committee consisting of myself and travis mitchell was formed, details were determined, and a date for the first lancaster craft brewfest was set for Saturday, august 10, 2013.

A total of 14 breweries were represented at the inaugural event, which attracted a sold out crowd of nearly 350 people to the lodge in lancaster. Those who attended had a truly wonderful experience, and they were thrilled to have an opportunity to enjoy themselves over the course of a few hours without leaving lancaster.

Not only was the beer festival entertaining, it was also educational. In an effort to make this particular event a bit different than others, most of the participating breweries were asked to have representatives in attendance to discuss the product, pass along information and answer any questions that members of their inquiring audience may have. A few of the actual brew masters who create the beers came to lancaster to discuss their respective journeys into the business and why they are passionate about their products.

One of the most impressive aspects of the event was the community support that lancaster craft brewfest received in the weeks leading up to it. Not only were funds received from a variety of generous sponsors, but several businesses provided in-kind donations such as marketing support and supplies. Nearly everyone who was contacted played a part in making this dream become a reality.

2018 marks the 5th anniversary of when lancaster brewfest began and to celebrate this milestone, myself, along with a committee will be bringing the first annual lancaster brew week to this town on august 13th to the 18th, filled with many events spanning the entire week.
